A FUNDRAISING butcher is set to complete a daring SAS survival challenge just months after conquering Ben Nevis.

Cwmbran butcher Mark Roberts, 47, came to the aid of the Noah's Ark appeal when he scaled the Scottish summit in May, but this time his efforts are to help Guidedogs for the Blind.

Mr Roberts has generated around £400 in sponsorship money and is set to compete in an SAS combat survival mission organised by former members of the lite military unit in Brecon.

The event, which takes place between September 17 and 19, is an exercise in evading capture by ex-SAS soldiers. They will form a team known as the 'hunter force' with the aim of locating and catching other groups made up of four members of the public.

Although Mr Roberts is no stranger to harsh environments he is still unsure about this particular challenge.

He said: "Being part of a mountaineering club I have spent time in these sorts of conditions before. I was looking forward to it before I got the letter telling me what I had to do during the exercise.

"It said to make sure you eat well before you arrive because that'd be the only proper meal you'd have until the end of the trip."

Despite the selfless nature of Mr Roberts' exploits, he's quick to praise those who help him raise so much money for worthwhile causes.

"I'm lucky I've got a good set of staff who support me and look after things when I'm away. And also that I'm able to combine raising money for good causes with things I really enjoy doing," Mr Roberts said.
