FUNDRAISERS made a real splash at the annual Monmouth Raft Race. Celebrating its 40th anniversary, this year's event has been hailed by organisers as a great success.

More than 50 rafts from across the country took part in the six-and-a half-mile race which started at Monmouth Rowing Club and ended at Whitebrook.

Organisers say they hope to have raised around £20,000 for charity following an offer from Wooden Spoon Wales to match fund all the sponsor money raised. The cash will be used to help disadvantaged children throughout the country.

The glorious sunshine ensured plenty of spectators turned out to watch. Even Monmouth MP Huw Edwards took to the river, paddling alongside the Monmouth youth rugby team.

But it didn't all go to plan - as organiser Peter Waters explained.

He said: "We forgot the horn to start the race, but luckily a St John's Ambulance horn came to the rescue. Needs must and all that."

T.G. Cars II of Pengam came in first in the men's race, completing the course in just 50 minutes.

The women's race was won by the Newland Mavericks, who managed to pass the finish line with a time of two hours and 27 minutes.

In the best-dressed contest a Jungle themed raft put together by Monmouth pantomime company Off Centre Theatre, took the top prize.

Mr Waters said: "Everyone who took part had great day and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We think we have raised at least £9,000 in sponsorship money and that will now be doubled."
