IF YOU think all Goldie Lookin' Chain fans are in their twenties, think again.

Because when we gave more mature people in their home city an exclusive preview of the posse's forthcoming album, Greatest Hits, the average age was over 50.

And the verdict from the streets of Newport was a massive thumbs-up for the rappers famed for their leisurewear and love of the 'Port.

We took a CD player, headphones and a preview copy of the Atlantic Records album onto the streets.

Granville John, 56, of Newport, put on the headphones and listened to track two, entitled Self Suicide.

Slightly surprised, he said: "It's more of a narrative than music - though the music is very good. It is very dry wit and tongue in cheek, I like it."

Peter Dickinson, 46, a carpenter, was silent while listening to the hit single Guns Don't Kill People Rappers Do.

His verdict was: "The music is really good and it promotes Wales, but there is no need for all the profanities."

Lads, take note.

But, Mr Dickinson added: "I would listen to the album again."

Susan Baker, 58, of Bettws, laughed all the way through the track Half Man Half Machine.

"I love the rapping, the words are brilliant. I have a dirty mind so I love their sense of humour," she said.

John Parris, 49, of Bettws, is already something of an aficionado.

"I have heard this before, it is in our local pub on the jukebox. I would listen to the album, but not with the kids around," he said.

Philip Bowden, 77, of Pill, had never heard of the Newport rappers, but was pleasantly surprised when he donned the headphones.

"It's pretty good," he said while dancing. "It has rhythm. I would listen to the whole album."

Elaine Clayton, 55, of Pill didn't want to take the headphones off as she listened to You Knows I Loves You.

"I could listen to this all day. It is wicked and I will buy the album," she said.

Mohammed Hussain, 54, of Six Bells, Abertillery, couldn't stop dancing while listening to GLC.

"They are excellent, I am going to buy this and wish the boys all the best," he said

Marion Harty, 63, of Pill, is their newest fan after enjoying You Knows I Loves You so much.

She said: "It's lovely and they are talented."

So, GLC, despite the generation gap, you knows they loves you!
