MORE heavy rain is forecast over the next 24 hours, bringing with it further risk of localised flooding in Gwent.
Parts of Newport were hit by flooding yesterday and the Met Office says that 50-60mm of rain fell in the area over the last 24 hours.
Localised flooding in Cardiff Road, Newport, led to traffic hold-ups around midday yesterday as the road was reduced to one lane.
Pensioner Joyce James, who lives in Cardiff Road, said: "This happens every August, sometimes the water reaches to my front door and my back garden."
Flooding also affected other parts of the city, like St Bride's. A spokesman for Newport council said: "The sudden and very heavy cloudburst experienced in Newport at lunchtime today has resulted in localised flooding at a number of locations.
"At the height of the storm the incidents reports were being received by the council's highways management staff at a rate in excess of one per minute.
"In the majority of cases the drainage systems were overwhelmed for a few minutes and the water subsided quickly after the rain stopped."
Chepstow was also hit by the heavy rain, with some pub cellars being flooded out, again with a recorded rainfall of up to 60mm over a 24 hour period.
