DESPITE winning a bronze medal at the 2003 World Championships, Welsh 1500m star Hayley Tullett insists she has not even thought about winning medal in Athens.

Swansea-born Tullett has emerged as a serious contender for a medal since her impact in Paris last year. However, she is only too happy to be in Athens - competing in the first round tonight - after injury ruined the start of her outdoor season.

She said: "My first target was to get to Athens in one piece and then my next target to be competitive in the early rounds and make the final and then I'll take it from there."

Tullett has a certain Kelly Holmes, who last night won gold in the 800m among other standing in her way, and the 31-year-old admitted: "I'm not the most talented athlete in Athens.

"But I work hard and if things go my way then I run well but if they don't then I have to start thinking on my feet and then I find it difficult.

"Paris was simple, it was a slow race, which suited me and when it came to the final 100metres I had enough energy left in me to sprint past the other girls so a lot depends on the way the race goes.

"But I'm learning all the time about decision making and I'm getting better at it so I'm confident."

Tullett's medal last year in Paris saw her suddenly thrown into the public spotlight after year's on the sidelines.

But the full-time schoolteacher is determined that life will remain the same despite her Paris glory.

She added: "Life hasn't changed one bit since the World Championships in Paris.

"I won't let it, I've got a routine which served me well before Paris, so I don't want things to change after it just because I came home with a medal. And that will be the case whatever happened in Athens."
