AFTER a week of abysmal weather, the sun finally came out and shone for the annual Bedwellty Show. Thousands flocked to the popular agricultural event at Blackwood Showfields that has run continuously since 1876 except for two world wars and two outbreaks of foot-and- mouth disease.
There was plenty of entertainment for all ages, with everything from fairground rides to agricultural classes featuring pigs, sheep, goats and cattle.
There was also a horticultural show and horse jumping displays. But there was one hitch. The main attraction - the Battling Cumberland Giants - missed their first performance because they were caught in traffic on the M4.
Event organiser Shirley Turner said: "The weather was fine, which was a miracle for us. The crowds seem to be coming in after a slow start but unfortunately the main attractions - the Cumberland Battling Giants - were stuck on the motorway for hours because of an accident.
"Overall we are very pleased with how the day went."
Caerphilly borough council leader Harry Andrews said: "We've had such dreadful weather in the week so we have been very fortunate today.
"This particular show deserves good weather because it has always been a very important show for the local community."
Roy Young, 68, from Greeensway, Abertysswg, was at the event with his wife Sheila and their grandchildren Martin, five, and two-year-old Andrew. He said: "I'm enjoying the show, particularly the horses. The weather is pretty good and that makes a big difference."
