THE country comes to the town tomorrow as thousands converge on Blackwood's showfield for the Bedwellty Show.

There's a packed programme for the whole family to enjoy, from traditional livestock competitions, involving Shire horses, cattle, sheep and pigs to a bustling fairground and trade stands.

A jumping competition takes place in the main arena, with horse riders pitting themselves against the clock.

The special attraction this year is the Battling Cumberland Giants show - a pair of 30-foot inflatable giants on quad bikes.

Last year around 8,000 attended the Bedwellty Show, which bar two world wars and the 2001 foot and mouth crisis, has run continuously since 1876.

"It's one of those long- standing events which local businesses and the farming community have worked hard to maintain," said Shirley Turner. "It's really important for kids in the area, because it's the only chance a lot of them have to actually see livestock up close."

Pride of place has to go the magnificent, and increasingly rare Shire horses, and you can expect to see 15 of them on show.

There are licensed bars and refreshment stalls, and the show runs from 9am to 6pm.

Tickets are £5 for adults and £3 for children and senior citizens, but you can buy them in advance from Tidal Stores in Blackwood High Street and get a £1 discount.

Disabled parking is available on site, and standard parking is available close by.
