THE Mazda RX-8, already hugely successful since its introduction to the UK, has claimed the 'Best Coupe' title in the 2004 Auto Express awards. This latest accolade is the 25th award won by Mazda RX-8 globally and its third major UK award of the year, after claiming the 'Best Coupe' awards given by What Car? and Top Gear magazines.

Judges of the award commended the Mazda RX-8 for its eye-catching looks and innovative design as it triumphed over rivals such as the Nissan 350Z, the Audi TT and the BMW 645Ci.

"The Mazda RX-8 looks absolutely stunning with its low bonnet and sleek lines," explained a contributor to Auto Express magazine in its latest issue. "Add in the reverse-opening rear doors and no B-pillar and the Mazda RX-8 is a genuine four-seater - rival coupes simply aren't as practical."

The ride quality of the car also proved to be a key factor in its victory: "The Mazda's handling will certainly bring a smile. The lightweight rotary engine helps provide accurate responses; the grip is fantastic and the Mazda RX-8 is nimble and fun."
