DOGS and their owners from across Gwent put their best paws forward to raise money at a charity event.

Scores of people flocked to Penallt, near Monmouth, on Sunday to take part in the Companion Dog Show in aid of the Sparkle Appeal to raise £250,000 towards the new £6 million centre for disabled people at High Cross.

More than £1,200 was made on the day despite the inclement weather. Dog owners entered their prize pooches in 27 different classes such as 'Best Scruff' and 'Most Appealing Eyes.'

The coveted Best in Show category was won by a Scottish terrier called Hector owned by Vicki Davies from Monmouth.

Claire Spencer - who organised the event along with her friends Ruth Thompson, Linda Cooper, and Caron French - said: "In spite of the weather, lots of people stayed and then the sun came out at 2pm in time for the auction.

"The auction itself raised more than £500 but there are still some items left that didn't meet their reserve.

"I have a painting of a palomino head by artist Pam Reed and there are also limited edition prints by painters John Silver and Dick Twinney. "If anyone is interested in buying the items they can contact me on 01600 713746."
