A TEENAGER is facing six charges after a car crash which left a Newport pub doorman fatally injured.

Gareth John Evans, aged 34, died three days after he was involved in the collision with a car on Queensway, in Newport city centre, as he walked to work.

Yesterday afternoon, detectives charged a 19-year-old with six offences relating to the incident on April 30. The charges are:

Driving without due care and attention. Driving otherwise than in accordance with a driving licence. Driving without insuranc. Failing to stop at the scene of an accident. Leaving the scene of an accident. Attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He was also charged with an unrelated matter of possession of heroin with intent to supply.

DS Bob Toghill, from Newport Central CID, said the teenager was remanded in custody at Parc Prison, Bridgend, until his first court appearance.

He is expected to appear at Newport magistrates court in around a fortnight.

Hundreds of people attended the funeral of father of two Mr Evans at St John's Church, Maindee. At the funeral a letter from his parents, Janet and Alan, was read out.

It stated: "We have wonderful memories we shall treasure for ever. He was like a golden thread through our lives."

Mr Evans, who was divorced and living in Llanthewy Road, was a well-liked manager for Siemens Business Services and a pub doorman. Colleagues described him as a "big friendly giant" who was always polite to customers.

He worked at several pubs in Newport and was walking to work at Yates' Wine Lodge in the city centre when the incident happened.
