Student of the year

The Student of the year at the show will be Dylan Evans, of Gwynfa, Little Newcastle, whom Pembrokeshire College has identified as the best first year agricultural student for 2003-04.

As well as attending college Dylan is working on the family farm at Linton, Little Newcastle, and is involved with all aspects of farming, especially the dairy herd. He is a competent tractor driver, having gained his NPTC tractor operation competence certificate and he has also completed a first aid training course.

A college spokesman said Dylan has an excellent attendance record and his portfolio is very tidy and well laid out. He has completed his farm assessments and, if he maintains his level of commitment, should complete the course and gain his qualification.

45 years at Withybush

The County Show was a two-day event when it was first held on Withybush Airfield 45 years ago.

The 220 years old Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society has moved from venue to venue throughout its long history, moving to Withybush from Haverfordwest Racecourse, where it was staged for three years following the 1955 Royal Welsh.

A touch of the Caribbean

At last year's show the YFC marquee had a flavour of the Caribbean. This year it could look more like Ascot as members take part in hat-making competitions to celebrate the show's new Ladies Day.

There will be posh hats judged by Jean Rees and Jean Llewellyn, and fun hats judged by Western Telegraph editor, Fiona Phillips. And, of course, there is always bags of entertainment and lots to see at he YFC marquee.
