A GWENT canoeing club is celebrating more than 30 successful years - and it wants you to join in the fun, too.

The club started when a gang of Cwmbran youngsters enjoyed their canoeing lessons at school so much that they kept the group on after they left.

More than 30 years later their club is still going strong, with qualified instructors and more than 60 members.

Now watersports fans can sign up for canoe training sessions with the group this summer. Croesyceiliog Canoe Club in Cwmbran will run classes at Maindee pool, Newport, every Thursday from 8-9.30pm.

The club was started at Croesyceiliog Comprehensive School in the mid 1970s.

After leaving school the founder members stayed together as an independent club keeping the same name and affiliating with the Welsh Canoe Association.

The club has more than 60 members from across Gwent who take part in all aspects of canoeing, with qualified instructors in both inland and sea canoeing.

Away from the pool members enjoy river and sea tours during the summer months and have a well-supported winter programme with White Water Canoeing.

All new members need to bring is a swimming costume and a towel, as the club has its own fleet of pool kayaks and equipment.

There are four categories: senior, junior, student and family, divided into WCA and non WCA members.

The club also runs canoe polo sessions on the first Thursday of each month where paddlers of similar ability are matched for friendly competition and coaching.

There is a library of canoeing books, magazines and videos available to loan to all club members. For more information, call 01633 671820. Darren Evans
