THIS shocking picture shows the potentially deadly dangers that second-hand toys on sale in Newport shops can pose to children.

Newport's Trading Standards officers have been investigating second-hand children's products market as part of a recent safety survey. Officers bought twelve items from second-hand shops in the city, including toys and clothing, and tested them for features such as security of parts, construction quality, proper labelling and flammability.

All the children's clothing and nursery products passed the tests, but a teddy bear failed when it went up in flames just seconds after it was exposed to a naked flame.

Pete Luff, lead officer in product safety, said: "Most toys on the UK market today are safe to play with, but it is always advisable to check that the toy your child is playing with is safe."

He warned shoppers to:

*Always use a reputable shop or supplier; * Look for the CE mark on the product, this indicates the toy is manufactured to the correct standard. Although there is no legal requirement for the CE mark, avoid toys lacking it; *Check that parts such as eyes are not broken; * Follow the guidelines given on toys. Labelling such as 'not suitable for children under 36 months because of small parts' should be adhered to; * Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations and instructions.
