YOUNG Gwent golf professional Matthew Griffiths won his second pro event in three years, over the Bull Bay course on Anglesey.

The Cwmbran 26-year-old, sponsored by CRL Sports Management, St Mellons, smashed the course record by two shots in shooting a second round 62 to finish with a winning margin of four on the Tamsel Tour.

The round beat the previous best of 64 set by European Tour player Warren Bennett and added to his first round of 71.

Former Welsh amateur champion Griffiths, based at Woodlake Park, took part as an amateur in the 2001 Open Championship at Royal Lytham after finishing among the top twenty at one of the four qualifying venues.

He turned professional the following September and has since being trying to win a place on the European Tour or the second tier Challenge Tour.

For the past two years he has failed by just one shot to reach the second qualifying stage for the European Tour from the Carden Park course at Chester and will be trying again on September 14.

This season he has been in action on the the Barry Hearn-sponsored Euro Pro Tour - where he is again performing this week at Morley Hayes, Derby.

He has also competed in various other tournaments, including the privately-sponsored Tamsel Tour in which he has also finished third, sixth and tenth at other venues.

His previous tour win as a professional was over his own Woodlake Park course.
