ABOUT 80,000 people flocked to Caerphilly at the weekend to attend the annual Big Cheese Festival.

The free event, which takes place in and around Europe's second largest castle, was bigger this year than ever before.

Families basked in the sunshine and enjoyed the fireworks, medieval re-enactments, craft stalls and a cheese race around the castle.

This year the festival was buoyed by the arrival of some impressive white knuckle rides such as the Wild River Rapids and the "shot and drop" Big Ben tower ride.

The event has now established itself as one of the most important dates in the calendar of the organisers, Caerphilly council.
