NEWPORT County boss Peter Nicholas was pleased that his side came through another workout as their preparations for Conference South hots up.

Nicholas said: "It was another good runout for the lads. It has been three games in a week, and I am pleased with a lot of the new boys, and also with the guys coming back from injury.

"It is great to see Scott Morgan back playing again after a long time out, and he has been involved in three games.

"Also, young Andrew Thomas is coming back. I wanted to give him 25 minutes here and there to build him back up. I don't want to rush him because he has been out for a long time with a bad injury."

Nicholas appeared none too pleased with some of the tackles flying around, especially in the first half, but he did not over-emphasise any grievances.

He said: "There were a few tasty ones and we are a bit bruised. These games are about fitness, and you don't want to get any injuries, but we are OK. We've got Clevden on Tuesday, then Wimborne at YM on the Saturday, so we are getting closer.

"Hopefully we can get Scott Young sorted out early next week, and we are still in discussion with Jason Bowen."

For YM boss Mark Coldrick, the day was about as close to perfect as it got.

He said: "First of all this match is great for us because we got a great crowd and it is a big benefit financially for the season.

"Secondly, the squad has 99% remained the same from last season, with a couple of additions and a few youth lads coming through, and they looked good.

"Last year was a bit disappointing, but we will be looking to challenge again this year."

Coldrick denied that his YM side were over-physical. He said: "It was quite a competitive match and maybe a few of the lads were still thinking about the Gwent Cup final loss, but I don't think it was a dirty game.

"You can't tell two sets of players, who are always trying to win, to take it easy.

"But I was pleased with the performance and of the attitude of the boys, and it is looking good for the start of the season."
