ONE-PERSON shows are hard. Musicals are even harder. So whatever you might think of Faye Tozer's former career as a member of Steps, her courage in taking on Andrew Lloyd-Webber's Tell Me On a Sunday is to be respected.

The show follows an English girl in New York, her adventures in the city that never sleeps and her growing cynicism as she looks for love in all the wrong places.

Staged last year in the West End with Denise Van Outen, the one-woman show was a roaring success, and next week it comes to Cardiff's New Theatre as part of nationwide tour.

Faye said: "This is my first professional musical and I felt there was a lot of pressure on me in the first week, but after all the rehearsals it got much easier.

"I did find something of myself inside the part but you do have to dig around inside yourself.

"When I first found out I had the job I went to a vocal coach to get my projection going and to get some strength and stamina in my voice. "There's an interval so my voice gets a break and the second half is so good it just flies by.

"I never went to stage school, so I've not done this before. I didn't want to go into musicals because I know it's such a clich for pop stars now, but when this one came up it seemed like the one to do.

"And now I quite like it - getting all the instant reaction from the show, and having a laugh with the crew."

Tell Me On a Sunday runs from Monday 26 to Saturday July 31. Tickets range from £8 to £28 and shows are at 7.30pm with a 2.30pm matinee on Thursday and Saturday. Box office 02920 878889.
