The attractive small town of Newport was once a Norman settlement in the heart of the Welshry. Its history dates back to prehistoric times as is evident in the stone tombs or cromlechs at nearby Pentre Ifan.

Nowadays it is a top Pembrokeshire attraction, with its charm and tradition proving a pull for flocks of visitors every year.

The town has many attractions, including:

The 13th century castle, with wonderful views of the estuary. Now converted to a private home, the castle was built by William Fitzmartin, who also built the town's St Mary's Church.

The town is full of fine Georgian buildings constructed when the lucrative herring trade was at its peak. And the charming narrow streets full of intersting shops, cafes and pubs are delightful.
