Tim Stone, Newport speedway promoter, is launching a scheme to attract a "new generation of fans." Children, under 14, will be admitted free to this Sunday's Conference League meeting with Oxford - provided they have an adult with them.

And throughout August it will be kids for a quid to watch Premier League action - again if accompanied by an adult.

It is a triple-edged initiative by Stone, firstly as part of a community approach, secondly to introduce a new generation to the sport and, thirdly, to boost attendances.

Stone said: "Originally, a couple of city council wardens from the estates approached us and asked if we would be willing to provide free passes during the school holidays, which we were quite willing to do.

"But it has progressed from there and we decided to do it for all kids, not limiting it to just a couple of estates.

"It is a marvellous chance for kids to do something on a Sunday afternoon and it introduces a new generation to the sport. So, we're asking mums and dads, even if they are not fans, to grab a kid and introduce them to one of the most thrilling of sports."

l Alby Golden, the former Wasps' rider, has died. He rode for six seasons at the old Somerton Park track from 1964 through to 1969, making 165 league appearances, scoring 892 points and 163 bonus points from 641 rides, giving him an average of 6.58, scoring one maximum and eight paid maximums.

His opening Wasps' meeting was on April 11, 1964, at Cradley, when he scored eight points from four rides. He made his home debut six days later with 11 points at home to Cradley in a Southern League meeting.

Before his arrival at Newport, where he was their first captain, he rode at Southampton from 1956 to 1963 and was in a side containing Barry Briggs and Swede Bjorn Knutsson, both world champions, and fellow Newport riders Dick Bradley and Peter Vandenberg and following his six-season stint with Newport he rode at Eastbourne.

Stone said: "He was at the meeting when I announced in 1996 that I was bringing speedway back to Newport, driving up from his home in Southampton, and he has been to the new track a few times. It was very rewarding and a boost for me to see him at the launch and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time."

l Cwmbran's Tom Brown had three straight wins, including two 5-1s with partner Jack Hargreaves, in a 45-45 meeting with Boston. He also had a third place but in his final race suffered a burnt out clutch.

Brown, who rides for Stoke at Carmarthen on Sunday, scored four points in their Conference League Fours semi-final on his home track but in the final they finished last with six points, Brown scoring half of them.
