SEW in tears, reap in joy is an old (and slightly adapted) saying, but it's an appropriate one for New Tredegar entrepreneur James Mellor.

Formerly the chief engineer with Gossard, when the firm pulled out of the area three years ago he decided to recruit some of the machinists and pick up some of the firm's contracts.

Mr Mellor set up AJM Sewing with no previous experience of running a business, and took premises in Cwmfelinfach making lingerie for independent outlets.

He soon needed a bigger building and bought the former Bairdwear factory in New Tredegar.

This was another local clothing manufacturer that had hit difficulties and closed.

AJM continued to grow, and with the help of an economic development grant from the council, Mr Powell has invested in new equipment and expanded his operation.

The company has begun to diversify and has linked up with Orangebox (formerly Giroflex), another local company, which makes office seating and furniture. It now employs more than 20 machinists.

Mr Mellor said: "It was a daunting experience to go it alone into business, but thanks in part to the support and advice I've received from the council and others the company is in a strong position.

"We're very positive about the future."

Caerphilly councillor and cabinet member Tudor Davies said: "We're delighted to have been able to help James with his business venture and we wish him the best of luck for the future.

"It's especially pleasing that he located the business in New Tredegar, as the village is undergoing major regeneration, and this investment provides an added boost to the economy."
