England have recall-ed Glamorgan pace bowler Simon Jones, pictured, to their 13-man party for the opening Test of the npower series against the West Indies.

Jones, 25, missed the final two matches in the 3-0 whitewash of New Zealand earlier this summer with a foot injury.

But after proving his fitness with an appearance for the MCC against the West Indians this week, the Welshman was selected in an inflated squad for Lord's.

Jones will be vying with Lancashire's James Ander-son for a place in the final XI, it would appear, although both could play if Andrew Flintoff, one of two injury concerns, cannot bowl and the management feel they require four fast men.

All-rounder Flintoff has a bone spur in his left ankle and has bowled less than three overs since pulling out of the NatWest Series.

He returned midway through that triangular tournament, operating as a specialist batsman, a role which he may continue if the problem area gives him pain in the nets this week.

However, chairman of selectors David Graveney is confident the Lancastrian will be able to contribute in both disciplines.

"We will be closely monitoring Andrew Flintoff's fitness in the run-up to Thursday," Graveney said. "We feel that the more time he has to recover and receive treatment, the greater his chances of taking part in the game as an all-rounder."

England's other major concern, Mark Butcher, faces a race to be fit and extend his run of consecutive caps to 43, after tearing a thigh muscle nine days ago.

The Surrey batsman will be nursed along at Lord's over the coming days.

"We are confident that Mark Butcher will be fit and available for selection and the decision not to play him in Surrey's totesport League match is purely precautionary," Graveney added.

Kent's Robert Key, who has six first-class centuries behind him this season, will provide cover for Butcher although his county colleague Martin Saggers, who played in the wins over the Black Caps at Headingley and Trent Bridge, has been omitted now Jones and Anderson are fit again.
