Several new faces will line-up for Newport against Bristol City at Newport Stadium tomorrow, hoping for the chance to impress County boss Peter Nicholas.

The list includes former Cardiff skipper Scott Young and Jonathan Coates, the ex-Swansea midfielder, who have agreed to join County for next season and are set to complete moves in the near future.

A further four players, including former Cardiff stars Jason Bowen and Kurt Nogan, will also be given the opportunity in tomorrow's friendly, with manager Nicholas keen to boost his ranks for next season.

Two other strikers are included in the squad and will feature if they receive international clearance.

The first is Andrew Martin, a 23-year-old former Wales Schools striker who last season scored eight goals in 26 appearances for Hornchurch.

The other is Irishman Carl Wilson-Denis, a Brighton player who spent last season on loan at Crawley Town.

County chief Nicholas thinks the Bristol game, for the Billy Lucas Memorial Trophy, is an ideal opportunity to test the water with regard to potential new signings.

He explained: "We are extremely early on in pre-season so this is a great chance to have a look at a number of players. I have a budget to keep to of course but it's no secret that we are looking to bring players in.

"Scott Young and Jonathan Coates have agreed to join us for next season but nothing has been settled with regard to the other players.

"Scott Young really needs no talking-up because I think everyone is aware of what a super player he is.

"I have admired him for some time and we are delighted to have him involved. He will give us good options in defence and in midfield."

Young, 28, was forced to retire from professional football last season when a persistent back injury ended his 14 year association with Cardiff City.

He is probably best remembered for the goal he scored in an FA Cup tie in 2002 when the Bluebirds beat David O'Leary's Champions League challenging Leeds United 2-1 at Ninian Park.

Coates, 29, has played over 200 games for Swansea City and was an integral part of their Third Division championship side.
