A GWENT man died last night after a car crash on an Ebbw Vale street.

The man, in his early 50s, died after he was in an accident with a Land Rover Freelander, at Church Hill.

The local man, who is not yet being named, was taken to Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny, but died of head and chest injuries.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened at 10.30pm, to help establish the cause of the accident.

Blaenau Gwent councillor Brian Clements, who represents Ebbw Vale South, said of Church Hill: "It is a bit of a black spot in the area because there are a lot of parking problems."

A local resident, who did not want to be named, added that there were problems at the bottom of the hill with people trying to get to the takeaway and shops.

She said: "Cars are parked everywhere and it's a nasty spot. A man had an accident there a couple of years ago, but he was lucky."

Another resident, 46-year-old Audrey Whitcombe, of Eureka Place, said: "It's a nasty spot.

"People know of accidents happening there all the time."

Inspector Tony Green, of the Gwent Police force control room, said Gwent Police traffic section is investigating the incident and appeals for witnesses to contact officers on 01633 838111 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
