A COMPLAINT against world champion boxer Joe Calzaghe has been dropped.

The unbeaten WBO super-middleweight champion was arrested at his Cwmbran home in May after an alleged domestic incident.

But on the day he was due to answer bail at the police station in his home town, we can reveal the complaint has been dropped and there will be no further action.

The 32-year-old spoke to the Argus on his mobile phone from a beach in Sardinia, where he is holidaying with his three sons.

He said: "Basically, it was a load of rubbish anyway. How can they charge me over something that never happened?"

Calzaghe now wants to put the matter behind him.

He said: "I honestly have not thought much about it, I've not taken it to heart. These things happen. I've moved on in my life."

Calzaghe had been arrested after an allegation of threatening behaviour. He was later released on bail.

Gwent Police officers were called to an alleged incident at the home Calzaghe shared with now-estranged wife Mandy on Thursday, May 27.

Mrs Calzaghe, 33, later confirmed to the Argus that she was involved but would not discuss it further.

The alleged incident happened at a crucial time for the Newbridge-born boxer.

Just three weeks later he had been due to fight in the biggest clash of his career with Jamaican Glencoffe Johnson for the IBF light-heavyweight belt.

But the fight was called off shortly afterwards. Calzaghe, an Argus columnist, has held the WBO super-middleweight belt since 1997, when he beat Chris Eubank.

In 2002 he won BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year and was awarded an MBE last year.

Earlier this year his private life hit the headlines when his ten-year marriage reached "the end of the road".

The couple have sons aged 14, nine and six.
