GLAMORGAN skipper Robert Croft, pictured, says he has no regrets he is not alongside club colleagues Mike Powell, Alex Wharf and Simon Jones in England's provisional 30-man squad for the end-of-season ICC Champions Trophy.

Most England observers believe Croft, who has played in a Glamorgan record fifty one-day internationals for his country as well as 21 Tests, would have walked into the squad on this season's form.

He remains England's premier one-day spin bowler and is a more than useful one-day hitter, as he has shown this season with three National League half-centuries and a C and G Trophy ton.

But he announced his retirement from international cricket to concentrate on captaining his county at the start of the season and says he believes that was the right decision.

"I have no regrets at all," said Croft. "Perhaps I would have got in the England squad, but that's not for me to say, that's for other people.

"But I took the decision because I wanted to concentrate on my first season as official Glamorgan captain and I'm happy now to be focussing on that. Glamorgan is where my heart is."

Croft believes both Crickhowell-born Powell, a former Abergavenny club player like Kent's England wicketkeeper- batsman Geraint Jones, and all rounder Wharf can play for England at one-day level though he is not quite so sure about Jones.

"It's up to them to prove that now over the next month before the final squad is announced (on August 10)," he said.

"My only advice to them would be to forget about getting in the final 14. I know it's a tough ask, but they've got to.

"What they've got to concentrate on doing is just playing well for Glamorgan because as soon as you start thinking of bigger things you lose focus on what you are trying to do.

"They have got to remember to concentrate on what's got them into the position they are in now.

"They have been saying the right things and have not been counting their chickens, but it's easy to say things. It's not so easy to do it."
