Newport-based sprint star Darren Campbell's nervous wait was finally ended this morning when he was selected for the GB Olympic team at both 100 and 200m.

Campbell, who won silver medal at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney at 200m had been a huge selection doubt after a rib injury forced him to pull out of the 200m final at the Olympic trials over the weekend.

But he is selected for his favoured event alongside Chris Lambert who won the trial and Newport's Christian Malcolm, who finished fifth in Sydney.

Campbell missed the 200m final on advice from the UK athletics medical staff to rest and they have now given Campbell the green light to go for double glory in Athens.

Both Campbell and Malcolm are also selected in a provisional six-strong relay squad for the 4x100m alongside Jason Gardener, Mark Lewis Francis, Marlon Devonish and Lambert.

But Newport's Malcolm has missed out on a chance to double up and compete in the 100m sprint as the top three from the trial final in Manchester are selected for Athens, which puts Gardener and Lewis-Francis in alongside Campbell.

Olympic heptathlon champion Denise Lewis is named in the squad, but she must prove her fitness after hurting a foot during the Manchester trials. Lewis has two weeks to make a full recovery.

She said: "I'll now enter a period of rehabilitation which will decide whether I'm able to compete at the Olympics which are only five weeks away."

Paula Radcliffe has also been given the chance to double up in events if she wants.

The Bedford star is concentrating on the marathon, holding the world record - but to keep her options open in case of illness or injury she is also included in the 10,000m.

Kelly Holmes is also using the 800m distance, at which she won bronze in Sydney, as a back-up event for her main target of 1,500m gold.

American Malachi Davis, who only received a British passport at the end of last week, has not been included in the squad but he has been asked to race at Loughbrough this week against Sean Baldock with the winner likely to get the final 400m spot alongside Daniel Caines and Tim Benjamin.
