WORK on Newport's latest bridge is over and the entire Southern Distributor Road is now on course to open this month.
The last bolt on the SDR bridge over the River Usk was tightened in a 'topping off' ceremony yesterday.
The bowstring arch bridge spans 190m and uses 3,200 tonnes of steel to link Corporation Road with Usk Way.
Newport's mayor, Coun-cillor Ray Truman, said: "It's a fantastic bridge and another landmark for Newport. Visitors and residents will welcome it when it opens because the congestion needs easing.
"The bridge will be lit at night and has walkways on it. I think many people will enjoy walking across. The views are breathtaking."
Yesterday the mayor unveiled a plaque and a group of around 20 councillors walked across the bridge.
Graham Grundon, managing director of construction firm Morgan Est, said: "We're nine months ahead of schedule and expect to open before the end of June.
"This is a world-leading bridge and the most spectacular one we have built."
A workforce of around 300 have been working on the SDR since June 2002.
Brian Kemp, head of engineering at the council, said: "It must be stressed that the road is not open yet. We've already had drivers try to use the bridge."
The £55m SDR road scheme will slash congestion in the city centre by joining the M4 at junction 24 with the Pont Ebbw roundabout near junction 28.
