GWENT'S world champion boxer, Joe Calzaghe, was arrested at his Cwmbran home following a domestic incident, police revealed last night.
The unbeaten WBO super middleweight champion was arrested last Thursday, just weeks before he moves up in weight to fight for the light-heavyweight title.
Police last night confirmed 32-year-old Calzaghe, who last year was awarded an MBE, was arrested following an allegation of threatening behaviour and later released on bail.
Inspector Michael Vaughan said: "Gwent Police can confirm that officers were called to an incident in the Cwmbran area on the morning of Thursday, May 27. A man was subsequently arrested in connection with an allegation of threatening behaviour and has subsequently been released without charge on police bail pending further inquiries."
And last night Calzaghe's estranged wife Mandy, 33, told the Argus she was involved in the incident.
"It was to do with Joe and myself," she said. "But I am not going to make any further comment."
Joe Calzaghe was unavailable for comment, and is believed to be in London.
Joe's father, Enzo, told the Argus: "This was a private thing. Because this is Joe it's all over the papers."
The arrest comes at a crucial time for Calzaghe. The Newbridge-born boxer is in training for one of the biggest fights of his career.
Calzaghe is stepping up in weight to take on Jamaican Glencoffe Johnson for the IBF light-heavyweight belt in Manchester on June 12. The Argus columnist has held the WBO super-middleweight belt since 1997, when he beat Chris Eubank. In 2002 he won BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year and was awarded an MBE for his service to sport in the Queen's Birthday Honours List last year.
But more recently his marriage problems have been making the headlines. Calzaghe last month said his ten-year marriage to former music and drama student Mandy had reached "the end of the road". The couple have three children, aged 14, nine, and six.
