THE MAN who plunged 65ft down a quarry and was found dead on Wednesday is today identified as a Scotsman living in Cwmbran.
Two unnamed men from the Cwmbran area, aged 36 and 48, are still being questioned by police on suspicion of his murder.
The dead man, named locally as 40-year-old Francis Weldon, moved to Cwmbran from his home in Greenock, near Glasgow, six years ago. Police were called to the quarry at Woodcroft, Tutshill, near Chepstow, early Tuesday.
After a search of the area the body of Mr Weldon was found lying on a ledge 65ft down the quarry in the overgrown and secluded spot. The victim's two friends, who had contacted the police to alert them to the situation, were arrested and taken to Gloucester police station for questioning.
After a post-mortem examination, police say Mr Weldon died from multiple injuries.
A spokeswoman for Glouc-estershire Police said: "Police want to appeal to any persons who were in the Chepstow or Sudbury areas on Tuesday night or the early hours of Wednesday morning who might have seen three men acting in a manner that might arouse suspicion to contact us on 0845 0901234."
At 3pm yesterday, magistrates granted a 36-hour warrant of further detention in relation to the two suspects.
