POLICE in a Gwent town say they want to scotch baseless rumours that Maxine Carr is staying in the area.
Carr was released after serving half her 42-month sentence for conspiracy to pervert the course of justice by providing Soham killer Ian Huntley with a false alibi.
Rumours have been rife that Carr is living in a women's refuge in the Abergavenny area.
Inspector Allyn Richards, of Abergavenny police, said he was aware of the rumours, but did not know how they started.
He said: "I would like to put on record the fact that there is no truth whatsoever in these rumours and the sooner they are scotched the better for those running the women's refuge."
