A NEWPORT garage faces relocating for the second time in two years because of redevelopment.

Repair shop BN Gibbs will be forced to move from its Maindee base in Phillip Street to make way for flats.

Less than two years ago they were ousted from Mill Parade - where they had been based since 1926 - by construction of the Southern Distributor Road.

Bill Wardman, joint managing director, said the chaos left the firm and its nine employees in an uncertain situation.

His latest worries started when Newport council approved plans for 21 homes on the Phillip Street site.

Mr Wardman said: "I can't believe this is the second time we will be forced to move.

"We are a successful business and this makes things so much more difficult.

"We're established here and I'm very annoyed we now have to move. Residents want us to stay.

"The last move was horrendous. To move a body shop with all the jigs and equipment is not an easy task."

Mr Wardman said the city's vision of regeneration has caused his firm to be shunted from one place to the next.

He said: "My business has been dealt a huge blow. It's been difficult to find an alternative site."

When the business moves it will be reassessed by insurance companies, who could withdraw their support.

He added: "I was looking at another site but that is also up to be made into housing.

"All these houses are being built, but where are the places for people to work?"

Peter Williams, development control manager with the council, said there was plenty of room in other industrial areas of Newport.

Alan Darlow, director with landlords of the garage, Llanhennock Investments, said: "The garage took a lease with a three months' break clause because of potential development. They got a reduced rent for that."

Developers will give £50,000 towards schools infrastructure to help cover the extra pupils it will bring to the area.
