HUGE clouds of black smoke covered Newport last night after several tyres caught fire.
The blaze broke out in Corporation Road, near the Alphasteel site, where controlled burning of rubbish spread to a pile of rubber tyres which created the thick smoke.
Firefighters were called to the blaze just before 7.30pm and it was under control in just over an hour.
