JASON and Paul Jinks have a very good reason for taking part in a charity bike ride this weekend - their mum.

The brothers are gearing up for the Cancer Research Get On Your Bike sponsored ride to help beat the disease that threatened their mother's life.

Dorothy Jinks, 63, of Rogerstone, was diagnosed with breast cancer 10 years ago but after treatment was given the all-clear with the help of Cancer Research UK.

Mrs Jinks said: "I am extremely proud of them. It's lovely that they can think of others."

Sons Paul, 34, and Jason, 31, who live in Rogerstone, are joining other bike riders on Sunday at Tredegar Park for the 15-mile cycle.

Father-of-three Paul, a Gulf War veteran who was lance corporal in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, said: "It's only because of money raised which allowed more research to cure my mother.

"The more money Cancer Research UK gets the better the treatment will be.

"We also had two grandparents who died of cancer and a close family friend's daughter.

"I am studying for Microsoft exams and I am working on my house and running for Tredegar Park council, so I haven't had as much time to train as my brother."

Jason, 31, is a surveyor for Dudleys shop fitters and used to race motorbikes.

He said: "I had a nasty accident racing a motorbike. Now, I use cycling as part of a fitness regime.

"I keep my training and fitness up to prevent deterioration and arthritis."

So far the brothers have raised £66 and want to thank Baileys, Baneswell, Newport; Kwikfit, Queenshill Motors and Carcraft as well as friends and family for rallying round.

Dad Byron, 74, said: "I think it's great the boys are doing this. People think that when you have been diagnosed with cancer it's the end but Dorothy proves it's not."
