WITH summer on its way, the Brecon Beacons is in bloom and offering something for all the family looking to escape for a day in the outdoors.
Whether you are looking for a leisurely stroll in the mountains, taking up a new activity or just getting on your bike, there will be something to match your mood.
Just under an hour's drive from Newport and just a short trip from the north of Gwent, Brecon may be most famous for its acclaimed annual jazz festival, but has something going on all year around.
This weekend you can put on your walking boots and take part in the renowned Brecon Beacons horseshoe walk.
And next week, starting at 9.30 am on Sunday, May 30, groups of walkers will walk from the layby east of Pencelli to Cefn Cyff.
But there is much more than walking available to visitors to the Brecon Beacons - from fishing to sailing, kayaking to windsurfing, horseriding to cycling.
The Brecon Beacons was designated a National Park in 1957, with the aim of protecting its natural stunning landscape which gives some of the most spectacular scenery, spanning some 520 square miles.
Despite being most famous for its mountains, it also boasts waterfalls, caves and gorges.
And for families new to visiting the region, the National Park Authority are on hand to help visitors enjoy and understand the park.
It is now easier than ever for everyone to visit Brecon for a day out. The "Beacon bus" now runs from Gwent, starting in Newport and heading up to Brecon returning in the afternoon. Passengers can take bikes on the buses.
