NEWPORT Wasps' plans to secure a first leg lead against the Exeter Falcons tomorrow have been rocked by the news that Pavel Ondrasik, pictured, has joined popular rider Tony Atkin on the sidelines.

The Czech rider, who has been so impressive for the Wasps so far this season is currently in the Czech Republic being treated for ligament damage and definately won't ride this weekend.

Ondrasik's local doctor is currently assessing the extent of his injury and the Czech rider has already started a course of physiotherapy.

The exact return date for Ondrasik is as yet unclear, but he is expected to fly back to Wales sometime next week as he looks to step up his fitness in time for a hectic period in the season.

Ondrasik's injury left the Wasps needing a guest rider for both Sunday and Monday's meetings and Wasps promoter Tim Stone spent Friday frantically looking for replacements.

Somerset rider Jamie Smith will deputise for Ondrasik on Sunday and Stone was delighted to secure his services.

He said: "Jamie has riden here twice already this season so he is familiar with us and we know him fairly well, he's a very good rider."

Meanwhile popular Wasps rider Tony Atkin is recovering after a broken arm turned into a health nightmare for him.

The experienced rider developed a blood clot which moved to his lungs and he required emergency corrective surgery.

Atkin was subsequently moved into intensive care but he has improved, although he's likely to be left with a metal pin in his arm on a permanent basis.

Wasps promoter Tim Stone said: "We are hoping that Tony is over the worst of it although the pin in his arm could become a permanent feature.

Thankfully though he is no longer having the breathing difficulties he was having, which is a big relief."
