A MAN was being questioned today after a 28-year-old woman died in a car crash.

The woman, who has not been named and is from the Newport area, was the passenger in a Peugeot car which was in a collision with another car then hit two parked vehicles in Chepstow Road at 8pm yesterday.

A Chepstow Road resident and a nurse passing the scene found the woman semi-conscious and supported her head until the ambulance arrived.

She was taken to the city's Royal Gwent Hospital with head injuries but later died.

The blue Peugeot 205 collided with two parked cars belonging to a family on Chepstow Road, near the Texaco garage.

The owner of the cars, who asked not to be named, said: "At about 8pm my family heard a loud bang.

"A car coming from the Coldra had hit the back of one of my cars and it shot forward into my other car.

"The male driver was out of the car and very shocked. The female was semi-conscious.

"Myself and another lady, who was a nurse, supported the lady's head until the ambulance arrived. We spoke to her but she didn't respond.

"Everybody has been shocked and everyone in my family found it hard to sleep last night."

A fire crew from Duffryn and a rescue engine from Ely, Cardiff, cut the woman from the wreckage.

An ambulance spokesman said they took two people to the Royal Gwent.

Police inspector Simon Jeffries said: "Two vehicles were involved in the collision but after they had collided they hit some parked vehicles."

A man was arrested and was being questioned today. Police towed away both the parked vehicles, a Peugeot 106 and a Rover. They are appealing for witnesses or for anyone who knows about events leading up to the collision to contact the Road Policing
