THE hit show My Fair Lady comes to Newport's Dolman Theatre for the week commencing Monday, May 24, staged by the STC Musical society, put on by professional producer Paul Chandler.

This fabulous show really needs no introduction as it is regarded by many critics as one of the best musicals of all time.

It is adapted from the famous play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw which took London by storm in 1914. In Greek legend Pygmalion was a sculptor and king of Cyprus who falls in love with his own statue of his ideal woman and with the aid of the gods bring her to life and marries her.

In the story from the wonderful partnership of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe a flower girl is turned into a lady of class just by altering the way she speaks.

My Fair Lady opened on Broadway on March 15, 1956, starring Rex Harrison, Julie Andrews and Stanley Holloway where it was an instant smash hit and ran for 2,717 performances. It made a star of Julie Andrews.

It transferred to London's Drury Lane where it ran for 2,281 performances, breaking many records. It is reckoned that every day of the year My Fair Lady is playing somewhere in the world.

STC Musical are lucky to have such talent as John Davies, who plays Professor Higgins, and husband and wife team Marc and Julie Williams, who play Freddy and Eliza respectively. The comedy is in the hands of Paul Tucker, and a newcomer to the society but familiar to playgoers is Graham Bryant, who plays Colonel Pickering.

Other cast members include Bella Mason, Peter Hourahine and Sharon Davies.

The chorus work is lively and exciting and the company is looking forward to it.
