TUCKED away along a quiet country road at Llanfrechfa near Cwmbran is the pleasant Raj Gate Indian restaurant.
My partner and I arrived on a fairly quiet Monday evening with the restaurant less than half full.
Apart from ourselves and another couple, the other clientele was made up of a table full of businessmen.
My partner chose the King Prawn Puri, jumbo prawns cooked in a spicy and tangy sauce and served on deep fried home-made bread (£5.95), which were fine.
I chose the Tandoori King Prawns, jumbo prawns marinated in mild spices and baked (£6.95) which was also good.
For the main course I took a gamble on one of the Raj Gate Specialities, the King Prawn Rashundi (£18.95) but found it was too hot and spicy for my taste.
But my partner was pleased with her Chicken Rezala (£8.95), pieces of chicken tikka cooked in a slightly hot and tangy sauce made with fresh green chillies, capsicum, tomatoes, onions and finished in a dry sauce. Along with side dishes, drinks and coffees, the final bill came to £65.10.
The service was good and the staff friendly. I thought the food was decent if a little pricey - but my partner was suitably impressed. Iwan Davies
