Community-based learners in Gwent are now able to continue their studies at degree level - thanks to an agreement between the University of Wales, Newport and the Workers Educational Association (WEA).
The University and the WEA have signed a Memorandum of Partnership covering the operation of the Progression through Partnership project, which provides a wide range of community-based courses within disadvantaged communities in Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen, Caerphilly, Merthyr Tydfil, and Rhondda Cynon Taff.
"The project provides opportunities for community-based learners to progress from WEA courses to degree-level courses," explained Jeremy Gass of the University's Centre for Community and Lifelong Learning . "The aim is to widen participation in learning at higher levels by basing courses at accessible community venues, and at times which fit in with other commitments such as taking children to and from school.
The Progression through Partnership project is part-financed by the European Social Fund.
