HOUSE prices throughout Gwent have shot up in the last year with Monmouthshire still the most expensive place to live in Wales and Blaenau Gwent among the cheapest.
Latest figures from the Land Registry show that house prices in Wales have risen by nearly 24 per cent since 2003. The average price is now £115,179.
The largest rise in house prices over the last year was in Blaenau Gwent, which recorded a 47.6 per cent rise.
Average prices for the regions of Gwent are: Monmouthshire £164,776 (11.3 per cent increase). Newport £120,805 (22.4 per cent). Caerphilly £91,049 (22 per cent). Torfaen £89,649 (15.9 per cent). Blaenau Gwent £58,191 (47.6 per cent).
Only Merthyr Tydfil, with average house prices of £57, 191, was lower in the 'league' than Blaenau Gwent.
Statistics for the last quarter did show a slight drop in some areas. In Torfaen average prices fell by 15.9 per cent and in Newport by 1.1 per cent.
The Land Registry figures cover the vast majority of sales in Wales but there are some exceptions and they are not adjusted for seasonal variations or other effects on the housing market.
