A CHORUS of approval is hopefully waiting to greet the musical quartet at the heart of this month's offering from Newport Playgoers Society.

At the Dolman Theatre in the city centre from May 17-22, Quartet, by Ronald Harwood, is by turns funny and poignant, telling the story of a trio of former opera greats now sharing retirement in a home for retired singers and musicians. The peace of Reggie, Wilf and Cissy is shattered when the fourth member of the quartet, Jean, Reggie's former wife, takes up residence.

"Large as life and twice as terrifying," grande dame Jean sows disharmony, but despite their differences the four plan to perform the famous quartet from Verdi's Rigoletto at the home's gala show.

Much hilarity ensues as the less-than-harmonious relationships between the quartet ebb and flow.

Playgoers regulars Pam Elliott, Steve Saunders and Olga Morgan are joined by John Sheen, in a welcome return to the stage.

The cast is enjoying being fine- tuned by director Anthony Broome, and a symphony of fun and frivolity should reach its crescendo at the Dolman Theatre from May 17-22.

Performances start at 7.15pm, except Friday, which are at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from the visitors' centre Newport Library, John Frost Square, or from the box office at the theatre on the night.
