GOING UNDERGROUND? That's entertainment, as the Jam famously sung, so get yourself down a hole this weekend.
Wookey Hole houses some of the most spectacular caves in Europe and is the home of the legendary Witch of Wookey.
In Somerset, on the very edge of the Mendips, the astonishing natural rock formations and vaulted caverns have drawn in tourists for hundreds of years.
The caves recently passed into the hands of the Cottle family, who are settling in one place after travelling the world with their own circus for many years.
And they promise to provide an underground experience that will delight young or old, with dramatic sound and lighting effects to bring the caves to life.
The famous Witch of Wookey - a rock formation which bears, from some angles, a remarkable resemblance to a stoop-backed crone - was turned to stone by an ancient monk of nearby Glastonbury.
But it's not all underground. Wookey Hole boasts plenty of attractions in the sunlight - in case the weather is clement.
Visit Wookey Gorge, where the subterranean River Axe ends its mysterious journey by bursting spectacularly into daylight. The gorge itself is a site of special scientific interest where endangered species of plants and animal are cared for in a joint project with English Nature.
Trace 50,000 years of human history around the Hole in the Caves Museum or watch paper being produced in Britain's last surviving hand-made papermill, founded in 1610 and producing paper since Shakespeare's day. You can even have a try at it yourself.
And for the children there's Victorian fun at Wookey Pier, a reconstructed arcade with penny slot machines and a magical mirror maze. For more information call Wookey Hole on 01749 672243 or visit www.wookey.co.uk Tom Whiteley
