IT could be another two weeks before investigations into the role of a crash barrier in the death of 20-year-old Glyn Gurney are concluded, say police.

The barrier, along the central reservation of the A4042, near Grove Park roundabout, Newport, snapped and buckled when the car in which Mr Gurney was a passenger collided with it.

Gwent Police were expecting the results of an independent investigation, by Traffic Research Laboratories (TRL), to be finished last week.

But Sergeant Martin Wilce, of Gwent's serious collision investigation unit, said yesterday: "There is no news.

"I've been on to the research laboratory doing the work and, while they did promise us the report by the end of February, this has over-run by a couple of weeks, as things do."

Nick Gurney, Mr Gurney's father, said the family were anxious to find out what went on and to get answers.

He said: "It is dragging out now and we still haven't got all the answers out of the way. However, I know they have got to do a thorough investigation for us to be totally satisfied with the results and I hope they come up with the correct result."

Mr Gurney said that once they had a result he was hopeful they could move forward and would have the answers they needed.

Mr Gurney's grandmother, Jean Jenkins, said: "Yes, it's taking a long time, but as long as the truth comes out we can finally put Glyn to rest.

"We'll be glad when it's over and will be more at ease when we know exactly what happened and whether the barrier contributed to his death. Glyn's mother is still very upset about it; we all are. It would have been his 21st birthday last Thursday and that was another hurdle we've got over."

Mr Gurney died when the Volkswagon Golf he was travelling in collided with the barrier in May last year.

His best friend, 23-year-old Christopher Dawkins, of Badminton Road, St Julians, who was driving the car, was jailed for four years last December for causing Mr Gurney's death while he was three times over the legal alcohol limit.

Mrs Jenkins, of Purcell Square, Alway, said: "Christopher Dawkins is paying the penalty for this but, at the same time, as Glyn's grandmother, I feel upset because Glyn wasn't a vindictive lad and I think he would be upset at what's happened."
