THE eye department at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, is looking to set up a patient support group for people suffering from glaucoma.
The objective of the support group would be to provide more information about the condition in an informal and relaxed atmosphere.
It is hoped that quarterly meetings would be set up with guest speakers providing the latest information and updates on research.
The first meeting will be held in the eye outpatient department (Block E) of the Royal Gwent on March 24 at 7pm.
Further details are available from Joanne Roberts or Barbara Hewitt on 01633 656268 or 238413 who can also to provide more information about the group.
The group is open to patients receiving treatment at other hospitals.
l Glaucoma is a condition in which the optic nerve has become damaged. The damage is permanent and initially destroys the off centre part of a person's vision - the peripheral vision. Sight continues to deteriorate and, if the condition is not treated, the condition can cause blindness.
Chronic glaucoma is the most common form of the condition and has no symptoms and causes no pain. It affects 1-2% of the population over the age of 40.
