GWENT boxer Matthew Edmonds will have another chance to push his claims for a Great Britain Olympics place in Poland on March 29.

That is when the next Olympics qualifying event takes place in Warsaw following the European amateur championships in Croatia this week.

The European championships have been a disaster for the Welsh team with every one of their boxers crashing out in their first bouts, though most have been up against tough opposition.

Edmonds, one of three Welsh boxers backed by the Elite Cymru scheme, did not even last the distance in his fight.

The young flyweight was stopped in the third round by hard-punching Turkish champion Kordel Kadri. Edmonds' St Joseph's, Newport, team-mate Mo Nasir did go the distance at light-flyweight against Moldovia's Viacheslav Gojan, but was outpointed 43-23.

Big-punching West super-heavyweight Darren Morgan of Bonymaen was expected to do well as he has a stoppage victory over the existing champion to his name.

But he too went out immediately, stopped in the third round by Switzerland's Nikola Vujasinovic.

Carmarthen heavyweight Kevin Evans was also stopped in three, by Dimitri Pukhalev of Georgia while also beaten in the third was Cwmavon lightweight Peter Ashton by Oviviu Bobirnat of Cyprus.

Another Welsh lightweight, Gareth Couch of Thame was outpointed 28-17 by Roman Kulitchenko of Israel; featherweight David Davies was outpointed 23-9 by tough Armenian Harutyn Thovmasyan and light-heavyweight James Whitfield was knocked out in the third round by Miroslav Krepstul of Lithuania.
