NEWPORT sprinter Chris-tian Malcolm wants to go down in history as the last ever winner of the 200m at a World Indoor Championships.

The event which is due to be scrapped after this year's championships in Budapest next month has been good to Malcolm.

In 2001 in picked up the silver medal and announced his arrival into senior athletics and it has been on the indoor circuit that Malcolm has had most success.

But next month's World Indoor Championships in Budapest will be the last time that the 200m is run at a major indoor competition and Malcolm is desperate to go down in history as the last ever winner.

"It would definitely be nice to go down in history as the last ever winner and that has to be my focus," he said. "The event has been good to me but I'm going to have my work cut out. I was looking at the times and the rankings yesterday and I'm only the sixth fastest man in world over 200m so I've got a lot of hard work to do."

The 24-year-old was picked in the GB team ahead of Allyn Condon and along with UWIC sprinter Tim Abeyie.

They join fellow Welsh runners James Thie (1500m), Jamie Baulch (400m), Hayley Tullett (3000m) and Catherine Murphy (400m) over in Budapest.

And Malcolm admits that he was surprised to be picked.

He said: "It was a bit of a shock, I've only run once this season and my time wasn't as fast as Allyn's (Condon), so it is a shame for him because he has worked hard but I can't complain and I'm delighted to be picked."

Malcolm has been struggling with a long-term groin injury and has been unable to train at 100 per cent. But the Newport man is confident the injury will clear up in time for the World Indoor Championships. He said: "I had a scan last week and am still waiting for the results to come back.

"The doctors have the results and if there was anything seriously wrong then I'm sure they would have told me.

"But it's getting better all the time and am trying to as much speed work as possible."
