SPORT can divide communities, friends and families - and so it was in Pill's Irish Club.
Four-year-old Bono Marshall sat on the lap of his Ireland-supporting mother Sylvia, bravely shouting for Wales.
As Bono demanded: "What are you laughing at? I want Wales to win,"
Ireland supporters sipped Guinness and watched their team hammer Wales 36-15 in the Six Nations clash.
Landlady Sheila Gill had a 100-strong crowd for the match.
Lisa Ball, 33, from Risca, said: "I didn't expect Ireland to break into such a lead so quickly but we'll cope."
Elsewhere, more Welsh fans struggled to keep their spirits up. At the Walkabout Inn in Bridge Street there was a mood of frustration.
Jason Zerk and his partner Sally Jackson, both of Newport, watched anxiously as the second period kicked-off.
"We saw Wales play in Australia where they were fantastic. We thought they'd storm this game," Sally said.
