CHRISTIAN Malcolm acclaimed his 200 metres victory in last night's Norwich Union Indoor Grand Prix with a simple word - 'wow'.

The Newport star was electric in ripping a high-quality field to shreads and finishing the race at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham, in 20.74 seconds, ahead of seven other athletes.

And now, in Olympic Games year, Malcolm has the momentum to make his mark.

He said after victory yesterday: "I didn't know what to expect. It's very important to get a good result and I will sit down now with my coach (Jock Anderson) and look at what will be the next step forward.

"It will be great to run the 200m at the World Championships but, at the same time, we have to look at the outdoor season as it's Olympic year."

But Marshfield-based Jamie Baulch, despite being in second place after the first lap of his 400m last night, could not get into the top three, finishing fourth with a time of 47.35secs behind Chris Brown of the Bahamas.

And, Baulch's near neighbour in Marshfield, Olympic Games silver medalist Darren Campbell, was involved in a lot of controversy in the men's 60m.

During his heat, Bath's Jason Gardener, the hot favourite to take world indoor gold and the fastest man in the world this year, was well down after American Coby Miller was disqualified for two false starts.

And, in the final, Campbell, who had finished third in that heat, found himself sent back to the dressing room without running, disqualified for a false start. American Brian Lewis won in 6.58secs.
