Wales boss Mark Hughes, pictured, insists that his side have made a statement of intent following their 4-0 victory in last night's friendly against Scotland.

Hughes' side were emphatic winners last night with Robert Earnshaw scoring a hat-trick and Gareth Taylor grabbing his first international goal for Wales.

And Hughes feels that his side have proved a lot after last night's victory.

"It was important to get this win and get the Russia result out of our minds," said Hughes.

"I've learned a lot about my players during this game and I feel that the manner of the performance and result would make the rest of the sides in our World Cup qualifying group sit up and take notice.

"We've made a statement with this performance and have sent a message to the rest of the world that we are a decent side.

"We got off to the perfect start and from there on in it was always going to be hard for Scotland to get back into the game.

"I always like us to start quickly and put the opposition under pressure immediately and we did that but I was pleased with our pace and penetration all night.

Hughes also paid Cardiff City duo Robert Earnshaw and Paul Parry a glowing tribute after the game.

"Rob (Earnshaw) was electric all night and he was outstanding all night and has now shown without doubt that he can play at the very highest level," said Hughes.

"Only Earnie can stop himself going on to be a very, very good player and he knows that he stillhas room for improvement and he's prepared to work hard to do that.

"He's improved over the past 12 months, his hold-up play is better as is his general awareness of other players around him and he is becoming a very good player.

"Paul Parry did very for someone that has just started playing professional football. He handled himself very well and you could see he was enjoying himself."
