A CWMBRAN teenager is today fighting for his life after surgeons removed a blood clot from his brain.
Matthew Young, 18, collapsed on his mother's doorstep in Fairwater, covered in blood, after a night out.
She put him to bed, not realising how badly injured he was, but he was rushed to hospital the next day after his condition worsened.
It was discovered he had a fractured skull, and was taken to the neurology department at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff for surgery. He remains unconscious and in a serious condition.
Gwent Police are investigating the incident which happened in the early hours of Saturday.
Officers confirmed Matthew's watch, two silver chains and his mobile phone were missing.
It is known the teenager was out with his brother and friends in Old Cwmbran on Friday night.
He became separated from the group and was last seen in a chip shop off Victoria Street in Cwmbran.
Officers in the case said they are keeping an open mind about how Matthew was injured.
A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said the teenager had surgery last night. "The next 12 hours are vital," she added.
Detective Inspector Mike Jones said the youngster may have been attacked and robbed or accidentally fallen from a height and lost his jewellery and phone.
Shocked councillor for Fairwater, William King, told the Argus: "I am very surprised to hear of this incident. Fairwater and Old Cwmbran are not known for being dangerous or violent areas."
Mr King said his thoughts were with Matthew and his family. Anyone with information should call 01633 838111.
